MST3K: The Girl in Lover’s Lane

Well….the commentary was hilarious.  The movie?  A bit freaky.  Much more violent and graphic than you would imagine for a  1960’s movie.  I mean they talk about violence nowadays.  Vigilante justice, a sprinkle of gang beatings and a good dose of rape and murder.  Thankfully we had some jokes to make the moment lighter.

Meaning of the Mix

My favorite thing about iTunes is how easy it is to make mixes.  Tompaul and I have been making each other mixes for as long as I can remember…definitely since we started dating.  I am not even sure how many in all we have made.

In truth the only other person I have made a mixes for is my friend Myntha.  No wait…I made one for Mary Heather called Pink Rain.  I think in all I have made Myntha  about 4 mixes. Out of Apathy, Bitter, Sweet, and Winter: Death of Reverence.  And now Broken.    I make music mixes when I am feeling good.  If I am making a mix it means I am in tune with my soul, my id etc.  When I am feeling intellectually constipated my music mixing ability stops.  It goes into hibernation…unused.  I feel that when I make a mix I have something I want to say.  When I am overwhelmed with work, residency, I have nothing to say.  My brain is silent.  Since starting fellowship I have mede a total of two mixes Broken and Longing.  I am also working on a mix I started quite a while back.

So here I present Broken:

1.  Ambulance –  Eisley
2. Rise Up – Diane Birch
3. World Spins Madly On – The Weepies
4. Love the Way You Lie – Eminem
5. Mess Of Me – Switchfoot
6. Hero – Jars of Clay
7.  The Wanderer –  Johnny Cash (w U2)
8.  Fighting Furies – Charmaine
9. Fix You – Coldplay
10. Forgive Me – Jars of Clay
This is Longing.  The full title is Longing: Songs of A Time Travelers Wife. I compiled it while Tompaul was away.  It’s a tale of waiting, bitter sweet.  It was the space I was in when starting fellowship, living in a new city and waiting for Tompaul to come home.  He was gone almost a month and while I was waiting I had alot of heavy things on my plate. Job search, Noelle being ill and the uncertainty of that etc.

Longing:  Songs of A Time Traveler’s Wife

1. World Spins Madly On – The Weepies
2. Swallowed In The Sea – Coldplay
3. Hometown Glory (Radio Edit) – ADELE
4.  Mirrors & Smoke  – Jars Of Clay
5. Shiver – Coldplay
6. Vegas Baby – The Weepies
7. Girl Named Tennessee  – Needtobreathe
8. Hey, Soul Sister – Train
9. Birdhouse In Your Soul – They Might Be Giants
10. With Or Without You – Grits
11. Gotta Have You – The Weepies

Humorous History

I have started reading The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell.

There are many things I enjoy about Sarah Vowell, but I appreciate most her ability to bring out the quirky bits of history and just put it into a context where I feel like the past has helped me understand the current.  For example The Wordy Shipmates has talked some about the love of books of the Puritans.  I definitely noticed this on our Noreaster trip.  So may bookstores!  I was salivating … everywhere.   Unfortunately they were all closed.  As Steve and Sharon (friends who helped us move) can attest, the last things Tompaul and I need are more books.

I think the first Sarah Vowell book I read was Assassination Vacation.  It combined my love of presidents, history and comedy.  So far this book is going well.  Of course I loved her as Violet in The Incredibles.

The Desert of Maine

Tompaul and I  made a quick run to New England this weekend.  Tompaul needed two last interviews for his Leap of Faith documentary.  I needed to get out of the city.   The first interview was in Freeport, ME at Wolf’s Neck State Park. We had been there before and it was amazingly beautiful nature.

Where does one go after the ocean?  The desert of course!  These were just taken with my phone but hopefully it captures something of the radness.

The Desert of Maine has been featured in Ripley’s, Travel Channel, National Geo.  What is it you say?  The coolest place ever!  Apparently the desert is a result of a sand deposit left by a glacier eons ago.  Some farmer bought the farm in the 1700’s and essential practiced poor farming causing the thin layer of topsoil errode.  Finally they couldn’t grow anything and used the land to graze sheep…who completely tore up the topsoil.  The result?  The Desert of Maine.Maine Coon Cat SallyButterfly RoomButterfly Room

This was our tour guide.  He gave one of the best tours I have been on in a while.  Here is the view from the largest dune which is 90 feet high.Good Times

Crazy Calzones

Tompaul works late on Thursdays so I take call then.  If nothing “distracts” me then I usually spend some more creative time with dinner.  Tonight I decided to give calzones a try.  I made calzones tons in Nashville but that was with easy access to Trader Joe’s to pick up pizza dough.

Trader Joe’s is definately here…which I appreciate.  It is just not convenient.  (noting a theme about grocery stores and downtown baltimore anyone?)  It’s about 30 min away.  So I have resorted to making my own pizza dough.  Thanks to my friend Sharon who gave me her amazing recipe!

Preheat oven  450 degrees F

Mix the following  in a medium bowel (or the stand mixer bowl) and let stand for 10 minutes:
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

Then mix in
2 1/2 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1-2 tsp of  italian seasoning
1 tsp cracked pepper
garlic powder

Needs to sit at least 5 minutes but the longer the better. This is mine after sitting for 30 minutes

So I made my dough and filled with spinach, basil, paremsean and riccotta cheese. Here is the finished product!

Chillaxin’ @ the Harbor

Last night I was not on call so I decided to make the most of it. Tompaul and I had pineapple teriyaki  burgers for supper and homemade pineapple popsicles.

Then a quick walk down to the Harbor.  The weather was wonderful, breezy and beautiful.  It felt like fall.  We went into Barnes & Noble and I got a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

The taste of this yearly autumnal drink gets me ready for the changing of leaves, distracts me from the shortening of days.  Soon it will be time to break out the SAD light.

While in B&N I found a new book that I want.  Cake Love.

He makes cake baking look so easy. I always feel like my cakes turn out so funky looking.  I can make them taste good, they just don’t look good.

Birthday for Ba

On Saturday I invited Tompaul’s parents and aunt over for lunch.  The request from the birthday ba was mexican food and chocolate cake.

Menu:

–  Mexican Rice, Cheese sauce, Sweet Corn Bread– Guacamole, Salsa, LimesAnd for the finale……Homemade Hershey’s Chocolate Cake with a Lemon Curd Filling w/ Hershey’s Chocolate Frosting.  The “Ba” was made with lemon rind.
